Alternative Medicine/Supplements that cause gastric distress

Question
I am currently taking Prevacid after developing heartburn and stomach pain following taking Fosamax. When I stopped the Fosamax and the symptoms worsened, I deleted aspirin, advil, glucosamine/chrondroitin, vitamin C and Remifemen from my daily usage. The symptoms continued until I got a prescription for Prevacid.

Now I would like to resume the glucosamine/chrondrotin and Remifemin as they were controlling arthritis pain in my hands and hot flashes (I am 64). What is your opinion about these products contributing to heartburn and/or ulcers?

Answer
Hi Sue,
Anything you put in your stomach can possibly  cause gastric irritation and pain.
I do not have any experience with Remifemin.
The people I have had consultations with who have taken glucosamine and chondroitin have not complained of gastric irritation.
I would recommend you restart one medication at a time to evaluate which one is the culprit if any. It may be none of them. It just might be that you produce an excessive amount of acid causing the gatric symptoms you describe.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
