Question
I hadnt received a period for over a year because last october 2005 i decided to get the depo shot one time...and it messed my system up completely. I had tried everything to get it back including that provera. Finally i found Vitex and it worked great for me..i had took it for two weeks and received my first period November 15th 2006 then i received another one December 16 2006 and i kept taking it til january and quit. My question is will i still get a period every month even tho ive quit taking the vitex or does it only work when i take it? It worked so quickly im really hoping it keeps going cause were trying to get pregnant. How long are you supposed to take it to keep seeing good results? thank you sooo much for taking the time to answer my question i really appricate it!

Answer
Kristin,
Thanks for your question.  Many women find it difficult to regain normal menstrual cycles after Depo or other birth control methods.  Taking Vitex often helps with this.  The usual recommendation is to take the herb for 3-6 full normal cycles.  Sometimes normal cycles are established sooner, that varies according to other treatments, how long the woman was on the contraceptive, and overall health.  It's hard to predict how quickly it will work as a permanent solution.  Once it's working, most women find that they do not have to start the herb again; if that occurs, that's the time to stop self-treating and seeking out a knowledgeable professional.  Some women do continue to take it for other reasons, which is fine.  If you do find out you are pregnant, however, make sure you discontinue taking vitex, as it is contraindicated unless there is a specific medical reason.
Other things you want to do are eat a whole foods diet full of fruits, veggies, quality proteins, whole grains, and fats like olive, grapeseed, and flax oils; get regular exercise and fresh air; sufficient restful sleep; take a good-quality multivitamin & mineral AND an essential fatty acid like fish oil or flax/ evening primrose oil blend; and minimize use of prescription and OTC medications.
