Alternative Medicine - Treatment for acid reflux

Expert: Eric Brandt - 11/24/2005

Question
Hello - Before being treated, I suffered from fairly severe acid reflux and indigestion.  I have been taking 30mg of Prevacid as prescribed for the last 4 months or so.  I also underwent a procedure to dilate my esophagus.  There was damage to my esophagus from stomach acid, but no ulcers were discovered.  Even so, if I stop taking Prevacid for a few days, my stomach goes nuts.  I have no intention of changing my treatment unless advised by my physician...but I'm also not a fan of being dependant on medication.  My understanding is that Prevacid can inhibit the absorption of B vitamins.  I'm a male in my mid-30s with no other health concerns.  I've heard of apple cider vinegar being an alternative to treat acid reflux.  My question is, what are some known, safe alternatives to taking Prevacid?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Charlie,
Chronic acid reflux requires chronic treatment.
I do not have experience with apple cider vinegar.
I do have personal experience with chronic reflux for the past 20 years. Taking medications for it for the past 20 years improved my quality of life without adverse effects.
You may try alternatives but I do not know of any that would be as potent at reducing acid as  Prevacid and others in its class.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
