Alternative Medicine/Vitex giving odd results: missed periods

Question
The herb vitex is reputed to adjust levels of progesterone and estrogen, which one is dependent on which is out of balance in that person.  Also saw that it increases luteinizing hormone, which is supposed to trigger ovulation, and that it reduces prolactin.  Well: I tried vitex several times, for one PMS symptom that I get: major breast swelling before and during period.  Reducing prolactin should prevent that.  It did, but it also prevented my period from coming at all!  I have tried on two independent occassions.  Other women talk about vitex "regulating" their periods.  Not me.  Why? If it encourages ovulation, then why on earth would I not have a period when I use it?  I took 800 mg (in capsules, standardized extract powder) per day, for at least 2 weeks prior to the time my period was supposed to come.

Answer
Hello
Thanks for writing in.
There's a few things that you can try differently that may change your body's reaction to Vitex:
1.  Recommended dosage of a (0.6% aucubin) standardized extract is 175-215 mg a day.  At the dosage you took, the opposite effect might have happened because it was too high a dose.
2.  Vitex is commonly taken during the entire menstrual cycle, for 2-3 months before the full effect is clear.  It's not considered a short-acting herb, but takes some time to work.
3.  Since herbs may have varying effects on different people, you may be sensitive to the dose or the herb itself.  Vitex is about 90% effective in some studies for reducing PMS symptoms, but does not work in everyone.
4.  Other supplements helpful to reduce breast tenderness include Vitamin E, evening primrose oil, and gingko.

I hope that is helpful information that can give you some options for treating your symptoms.  Good luck in your search.
