Question
I'm looking for a hoemade cough syrup.  I've developed a cold and have an itchy throat that causes me to constantly cough.  I can't take over the counter cough medicines as they make my stomach ill.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Donna,
Thanks for your question.
Most homemade cough syrups will help decrease discomfort, but won't stop the coughing reflex like over the counter cough syrups.  A few home remedies for cough/ sore throat:
1. Simmer one lemon until it is soft.  Then blend or food process it whole, with the water and add honey to taste.
2. Chop 1 Tablespoon per cup of water and boil gently for 5-10 minutes.  Do not strain.  Add honey and drink while still warm.
3. Teas:  slippery elm or marshmallow tea are also excellent for soothing itchy throats.
If you have access to a health food store, the homeopathic cough syrup Chestal by Boiron seems to work well for most people without adverse effects.
