Question
I know that paud doesn't have a caffine, but I have developed a bladder infection while taking it. I'm drinking a quart of it a day. I have mets to the neck from breast cancer. Could paud'arco have caused the bladder problem? Do I need to cut back?

Answer
Ms Garcia,
Thanks for your question.  Pau D'arco is a diuretic herb, and any herb with that property can be irritating to the urinary tract, which can predispose one to develop an infection in the area, especially if your immune system is compromised, as it is with cancer.  It is also astringent and cooling, and if your body does not need those properties, it may lead to a poor reaction.  If the amount of liquid is irritating, switching to an alternate form (like a tincture or capsule) might alleviate some of the problem.  Without knowing your history or other treatments, those are the best educated guesses I have.
If you are treating your cancer with herbal medicines, I strongly advise you to seek out a qualified naturopathic doctor, herbalist, or other natural medicine pracitioner for assistance.  It can be very dangerous and overwhelming to do on your own; but there are knowledgable people out there who can provide support.  Good luck to you in your search.
