Alternative Medicine/sleep problems
Expert: Imran R. - 4/12/2007
QuestionHello. I've lately been having a hard time falling asleep at night. I usually toss and turn all night. When I know I need to wake up early in the morning I take an extra strength Midol half an hour before I want to go to bed because they make me really tired. I know it's not a healthy way for me to get a good nights sleep and I'm semi-worried Ill get addicted but it's the only way I fall asleep.
I was just wondering whether you had any ideas or tips about how I could fall asleep faster and easier.
Thank you in advance.
AnswerDear Cassandra,
Thank you for your question.
It is important to avoid stimulating foods during the evenings; anything containing a lot of sugar.
Taking hot (organic) milk with a small amount of honey works very well just before bed. The milk must be certified organic though. Do not drink regular milk. Honey should be just enough to sweeten, not too much. Milk contains an amino acid known as tryptophan. Once it is received by the brain, it is used as a building agent to produce the right chemicals in the brain which will bring about a calming and sedative effect. This helps one go to sleep.
Hot chamomile tea is another useful one before bed; again sweetened with a small amount of honey.
Bananas are also effective at night for many; once more, take organic produce.
Finally, oatmeal is also supposed to help.
It is important to take a good calcium/magnesium supplement, works well to feed and relax muscles. A good one we came across recently is made by 'EZ Vitamins and Minerals.' The product is called Bones. Contains a good source of calcium and magnesium in powder form. I would advise taking half a teaspoon twice daily with meals, in some fruit juice.. This product might be available in your local grocery stores.
If you are taking a natural nutritional supplement or superfood as i do, make sure you take it in the morning or afternoon,
not in the evening. Example:

We found this one last year, it is an excellent product, in that it provides the body antioxidants, vitamins/mineral and so on,
however it is best taken in the morning as it raises energy levels. Taking this or something similar in the late evening or at night
is not a good idea at all, because the body is now being provided with concentrated nutrition, which in turn raises overall vitality,
energy and focus.
I should mention, many people also have sleeping problems that are associated with the effects of electro magnetic radiation. Computers, TV's, cell phones/towers, alarm clocks, the wiring in the walls of the home... anything electronic gives off this harmful radiation. We have come across many cases of sleeplessness that are directly rooted in interference upon the brain causes by radiation.
For this there is a simple solution. Research this site:

Wrap the cables exiting the fuse box or electrical panel in your home with the 'energy strip'. This will alter the frequency and change the energy in your home to a harmonious and relaxed one. Also, i would advise placing a 'safe-space-1' somewhere in your home, (a central location). Together this will take care of any EM Radiation.
I would also advise you look into meditation as a daily practice.
As a dietary rule, cut out all soy products, (fermented soy is fine) and make sure you avoid all artificial sweeteners:
splenda, sucralose, aspartame, nutra-sweet, equal, acesulfame potassium.
Cut out all margarine and hydrogenated fats. Cut out canola, rapeseed and soybean oils.
These are unhealthy. Replace with butter, ghee, unrefined coconut oil, sesame oil, and virgin olive oil.
7 glasses of water per day is a good idea to help flush out toxins from the body. Warm or room temperature water, never cold. Never drink tap water. It must be filtered. Avoid drinking distilled water. It leads to mineral depletion and hair loss.
