Question
I have a 2 yr old Bull Mastiff/boxer/? mix with blisters that bleed between his tows and on his chin.  He does not act sick but now the rear leg and paw is swollen and causing a limp.  I am concerned he is getting an infection.  What could be causing this and what can I do to help him?

Answer
Hi Suzette
Firstly, you would need to look at why he is getting these blisters - is it from the sun, heat, a plant, is he rubbing against something?  It could also be his diet.  If he is on commercial pet food then this could be causing his skin problems.  I would also strongly suggest you visit the vet and get him to check your dog out.  If it is an infection then it could become extremely serious if not treated with antibiotics now.
Once you have him on some antibiotics then you can start looking at what the possible causes could be and eliminating them so that he does not get further infections or require more antibiotics.  Not treating the infection with appropriate medication could result in serious infection, blood poisoning and/or loss of limb in extreme cases.  All of which will be far more costly than getting to the vet now for a prescription.
Keep his immune system well boosted with raw and natural foods, and a raw meaty bone once or twice per week.  Keep him off kibble and tinned foods.  Raw meats and raw grated vegetables are best.  Add some supplements that boost immunity and skin health.  If you look at the internet there are many such products available.
You can also bathe the sores with colloidal silver with some sea salt crystals added.  This may help to some extent.
But, as I mentioned, the most important thing is to get the infection under control before it escalates into something far more serious.
I hope this is helpful.
With thanks,
Silva.
