Alternative Medicine for Pets - My Cats aren't well help!!!!

Expert: Marie Peppers - 5/19/2008

Question
I recently got a 2 month old kitten, before that adopted 2 dogs ( who both had kennel cough ) who did not get along with the 2 older cats so I brought them back and got the kitten. The kitten from the start was pooping very loosely. The vet gave him a de worming then he started sneezing and a few days later coughing. I took him back to the vet who gave him more de worming and antibiotics an eye drops for the running eyes. Now for the last few days my 2 older cats, who weren't all that well before but getting better before all the adoptions, have been getting sick there very hot to the touch an one is sneezing a tad an since yesterday haven't felt too hungry either they just lie around a lot. Help!!!! I cant afford a vet for them is there something I can do naturally? All the cats were vaccinated but the kitten needs 2 boosters and because my cats have had bad reactions to the vaccines I stopped giving it to them 4 years ago a few years ago so I think the protection is off. Ever since the pet food problem my cats haven't been all that well every now an then there temp goes up but its usually down by now. Please help I'm so scared I'm going to lose my cats.

Answer
Hello Nicky:  Oh, I am so sorry ... You have had some bad luck with the adoptions.
As for the older sick cats, this is hard for me.  I can't see them in person.

Here is how to take a pulse and temp:
If your cats will let you:

*** You can take your cat’s pulse by putting your finger on the inside of your cat’s thigh. This is where the femoral artery is. You can count how many heart beats your cat has per minute.
A normal pulse rate for a cat is between 110 and 130 beats per minute. A cat’s heart typically beats 90 to 100 times a minute.
***
When taking your cat’s temperature, you should use a regular thermometer. Lube it with vaseline or mineral water and insert it in your cat’s anus. A normal termperature for a cat is 100 or 101.5 degrees. If your cat has a temperature over 102, it has a fever. If the fever is high, you need to tell your vet.

You may be able to go on some type of payment plan with the vet....? You can always ask.

As for fever - you can use a cool compress:

One effective way to cool your pet down and fight his rising temperature is to apply a cold compress.
Soak a cloth in cold water, squeeze it, and gently pat your pet’s belly. You can also use isopropyl alcohol to quickly absorb the heat from the skin and bring down your pet’s fever.

Do NOT give any asprin to a cat... ( please don't.... ok)
Just wanted to add that just in case you did not know.

Make sure there is fresh water around for your cats.
It is too hard for me to refer you to anything natural because it could be very serious...

Please call around and ask a VET office if they can take payment. Explain your situation to them.. You may find someone who is very helpful and kind.

Good luck

I will be thinking of you!
