Alternative Medicine for Pets - cat and spondylitis

Expert: Silva Mirovics - 5/19/2008

Question
My 13 year old female cat has been diagnosed with spondylitis. She receives metacam. She has been a very healthy cat and a good hunter, mainly mice, rats and rabbits. She is often somewhat constipated and I would like to introduce something (natural) in her diet which would make bowel motions a bit easier, or less painfull for her.

Answer
Hi Marcelle
You should get good results by adding half a teaspoon of psyllium husks (soak in water first before adding to meals), or Slippery Elm powder.  You can buy these in health food stores and they should be able to give you advise on dosages.  It may be a little trial and error to adjust the dosage.  Make sure lots of water is on hand for her to drink as well.
Otherwise there are many digestive formulas available from natural animal website that will also assist with this function.
With thanks,
Silva.
