Question
I was wondering if you'd heard whether it is safe to give a dog regular Claritin for allergies. I had someone tell me that they give this to their golden retriever and that they've had good luck with this. I've tried looking this up on the internet and have seen mixed answers as to its safety. I am referring to regular Claritin (loratadine) not the -D kind.

Hi Linsey
I can never recommend giving animals Human medications. If your vet approves it that's fine, but many complications can arise and it can impact the health of your pet's kidneys and liver. Therefore, if you choose to give him Claritin then that is a decision you need to make yourself. I would be looking at what is causing the allergy and trying some natural approaches, such as massage, acupuncture, reiki etc.. to see if this can be resolved.
