Alternative Medicine for Pets/9 year old male cat

Question
We have had our cat since he was a baby, but never realized he was not defecating on a regular basis since we have 2 other cats that use the bins. We did notice drops of blood but that was only once or twice.  We finally took him to a vet and he was there for 4 days while getting 3 enemas to loosen up all the gunk in him. He is on two medications and Iams low residue formula.  I am against the food since it has by products but am not sure of any other food to give him, he won't touch the canned food.  I did have him on Core Wellness cat food and Wysong, only the best but this occurred and I am not happy. We have to watch the other two cats don't grab his food and if we go away he has to be separated.  Any suggestions for food?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Maureen:  I would leave him on the Iams Low residue formula.  I am not a big fan of Iams but in his condition, it can't hurt at all.
The other foods he was on were excellent.  I wonder if he was not taking in enough water and just started to dehydrate.
Too keep the stool moving you need plenty of water.

You can add a little salmon oil to his food.... about 1/2 a teaspoon per day - mixed into the food.

BEST wishes on this!
Don't have too many ideas for you.  Sounds like your vet is on the right track!

A product you can buy at the pet stores is:

Laxatone comes in a tube and is inserted into the cat's food for easy consumption.
