Answer
HI Susan
Firstly - skin conditions are mostly due to toxic overload in the system. Especially as a dog starts to age, and his body systems slow down, his immune system may weaken, and toxins build up in the liver and kidneys.  These toxins come out on the skin.  Tinned food is not the best - so try adding some raw grated vegetables to his meals, and some raw meats.  You would also probably want to look at adding Omega 3 oil blend (Flaxseed Oil) to his meals to keep the coat and joints in good condition.
Any drugs that you put in are providing a temporary relief solution and causing his immune system to work even harder.
My suggestion would be to get his skin condition under control with a herbal preparation from Animal Herbalist Robert McDowell - www.herbal-treatments.com
Email Robert and he will prepare a remedy to suit.  You may need to go through 2 bottles to get this under control.
Once you start seeing improvements here my next recommendation would be to use a homeopathic detox.  If you email the lady at Holistic Animal Medicines - www.holisticanimalmedicines.com - she will advise which detox remedy is best to use to cleanse out the liver and get rid of the toxins.
You may also want to look at adding supplements to his meals.  There are many canine natural supplements available these days on the net.
I hope this helps.
With thanks,
Silva.
