Hi, I have an 11 year old Pomerania who acts like she is a puppy but as we all get older I know things do down hill.  She had an episode last Friday and we were concerned that she had had a stoke as she lost control of her back legs and was yelping with pain, we were scared to say the least.  To make a long story short, we took her to our vet and she is on (Prednisone, Tramadol, Hydrocodine and one other med that is like Dramamine for possible ulcer prevention??) She was also started on HILL's Prescription Diet Canine j/d. Anyway, she is having extremely rapid breathing and she is only 8 lbs, and we are concerned, they told us she had done something to disc around her neck and said since it was “just one” and she had some rumatory arthritis all down her spine that they did not want to put her through surgery.  Now please keep in mind if she has the RA, she is about as spry as they come and showed no sign is slowing down even for her age.  I went out of town for a few days and y Mom stayed with her, an when I came home she got very excited and seemed to have a bark that would not stop, even to her dismay…breathing was extremely rapid and was almost jumping like hiccups would make you do.  It took a while to get her to stop that and the barking episode started again when she had to slowly walk to the paper when she goes to the bathroom and had an accident because she could not make it in time.  She moves very slowly.  I’m not a physician, but know that prednisone is not the most healthy thing to give my baby…when you love someone you reach out to help them any way you can, can you offer any suggestions as to our condition, I appreciate it so very much.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi Debbie:  OK, I have some help for your little Pom  girl!
I don't like the idea of her being on Tramadol and Hydrocodine at the same time... Ask your vet if you can drop the Hydrocodine.  
I have enclosed some links below on Hydrocodine and the ( Tylenol) effect /  Hydrocodine has tylenol in it.. VERY hard on your old girls liver.

Next, he has her on the Dramamine because of Nausea from the Hydrocodone.  ( possible loss of appetite and nausea).  You may be able to drop the Dramamine, too.
The rapid breathing may stop when you go off of the Hydrocodine.
See if you can just do 1 baby asparin per day ( the 81 mg coated Bayer Baby)************  Just ask/ aways make sure she takes any aspirin with some food.
