Question
I have a 3.75 year old Female Boston Terrier /Pug who is the most amazing dog in the universe. My 12 year cat and my 20 year old cat (whom she got along with) as well as a fourteen year old Schitzu that i adopted four years ago (who she annoyed) have passed to pet heaven in the last 4 months (all naturally).  I adopted two sister kittens two months ago who are incredibly awesome and play with Belle, but i would like to get her a proper play buddy. I would also like to get a dog that would do a little bit more than lick any would be burglars to death.  I have a big yard, about 1000 square feet, well enclosed, but live in a not so popular neighborhood (hence the desire for a more effective guard dog) that has got a lot of big dogs (pit bulls, Dobermans, etc...) so taking walks everyday isn't an option, though we do go to the dog park.  She is well socialized through doggy day care and really sweet tempered, though jealous for attention with other animals for my attention.  That is probably to much information but i was hoping you had a suggestion.
Thank you in advance,
Elizabeth

Answer
Hi Elizabeth and family...  Sounds like you have had some wonderful pets in your lifetime.
Now, for a new guard dog-type of pal for your Bug.
I am partial to little dogs but I understand you need some protection in your area.

In the past, I have owned a german shepard that was a LOVE.  This dogs was great with my older kids and loved all.  This dog was also a Good protector....
They are easy to train and very loyal.  I would call around and see if you can find a german shepard breeder or rescue.  Talk to them about the pros and cons of the breed.
I bet your Bug ( Boston) will get along with anydog you pick.

good luck
