Question Hello Marie, I have a 4 yr. old pitbull mix that I adopted a year ago. She has allergies & every month or two needs a shot from the vet. They give her two 2mg/cc of Triamcin. After receiving the shot she does great. Coat gets softer & shinier but it doesn't last long. I feed her California Natural brand herring & sweet potato kibble. I also add 1 1/2 tsp of Lipiderm nordic anchovy fish oil one daily to her food. She is 50 pounds. Is there any natural alternative to the steriod shot that she gets? Anything that will mimic the benfits? Also, is salmon oil better than the fish oil supplement that I am giving her? When her allergies act up she scratches her face mostly & behind her ears to the point that she breaks skin. I'm at my wits end, please help.
Answer Itchy pitbull; Itchy dog ears;
Hi Neil, I would love to help you and your pitbull kid.
As for the oil, I sure do like the Grizzley Brand of Pure salmon oil. I refer most of my clients to Yummy chummies or Grizzley oil - pure salmon oil from Alaska.
YOU can buy it in many pet stores or On-line pet stores do carry it.
We have had GREAT luck with the NuVET Plus Wafers and Acidophalus Probiotics -
It takes at least 3 weeks to kick in, but works great on my Itchy and Allergy dog clients.
SEE here: NuVET Plus - my bulldog page:
I would like to see her on 2 NuVETS per day for 30 days and then, down to 1 1/2 wafers per day long term.

When you order - call in - You can talk to the girls about the 60 Day MONEY back guaranteed trial.
Tell them PET Nurse Marie Peppers sent you:
1-800-474-7044
Make sure they know I want your gal on the double dosage for 30 days.
Here is the official NuVET site: you want NuVET Plus -
they make a powder or wafer:
use order code 81098 - when you call - ASK about the 15% off program
Also ****** ask NuVET to send you a bottle of the TEA TREE HOT spot spray - apply to itchy areas - avoid the eye area...
VERY safe and soothing.
NuVET products are healing.
NuVET helps to re-build the immune system and FIGHT off allergens.
After about a month, you may be able to skip the Steroid shots...
Also, you can ask your vet about 25 mg of Benadryl - when you are trying to ween off the shots.
Many dogs take Benadryl short term.
Next, A good probiotic: 1 Billion CFUs of Acidophalus:
Please give 1 per day for at least 120 days.
YOU can find this in any store that wells human vitamins.
Acidophalus is very safe and will help to get rid of the Excessive yeast in her gut and on her skin.
We may need to change her food down the road. For now, Let's treat her for Mainly Environmental allergies. Many pitbulls are allergiec to grass, trees and some kind of dirt/ and pollens.
You may want to wipe her paws a few times a day with an unscented baby wipe....JUST to pull off any pollen and dust/dirt.
Keep me posted! I am here for you.
