Question
I have a 9 year old basset hound whom has several sebaceous cysts.  She had her first one when she was 4.  Recently these have really begun bothering her.  We even had to have a tube inserted to drain a large one on her leg.  I am hesitant to have these surgically removed as she is no young pup and I don't want to put her through that.  Can you suggest any supplements, etc. that could help improve the condition of her skin?   Thanks!  Wendy

Surgery is usually recommended if the cysts become infected or keep reoccurring and weeping.  They do tend to disappear of their own accord.  But I understand how frustrating this is for you and your dog.  I would firstly be looking at her diet - only raw and natural foods should be served.  Commercial pet foods do nothing to enhance health or harmony.  There is currently a fabulous new book out called "Real Food For Dogs and Cats", written by a vet named Dr. Claire Middle.  It is available for purchase online at: www.freemantlepress.com.au
If you do not have time to prepare your own meals, then source out companies such as BARF (www.barfworld.com) for real food meals for dogs - raw patties ready to serve.
You can also look at adding a high quality fish oil tablet (high quality and sustainable fish oil) to daily meals.

Other recommendations are:  Do not wash her regularly.  Actually dogs who eat only raw and natural foods do not smell and do not get greasy and dirty and often don't need baths for several months.  A good brush a couple of times per week is sufficient.
I would also look at alternative for fleas, tick and worm control as the pharmaceutical brands are highly toxic and cause more damage to the skin and liver.  We have natural products available on our website so you can have a look at the alternatives there.
