My 13 y/o blacklab/german shorthair pointer is having problems with foul-smelling, brownish, sometimes blood tinged diarrhea all last summer and is beginning again this summer.  I live in Wisconsin. He does not have a problem in winter.  He continues to eat the same food and takes levothyroxine for hypothyroidism and phenobarbital for seizures which he developed at age 2.  (no changes there). He was tested several times by my vet last year for ova & parasites - nothing was found, but he responds to metronidazole.  While on it - no diarrhea; as soon as he's off it - he develops the diarrhea.  I suspect he's getting something from the grass he's "tasting", but can't prove it.  We walk many different paths and wild areas.  He has eaten deer and rabbit feces.  My other 12 y/o mix never has problems.  Is there some probiotic or natural homeopathic substance I can give him to prevent the diarrhea? I hate the idea of him having to be on metronidazole all summer.

Hi Jan - I understand and can help you two!  He has a weak immune system and can't fight off the bacteria from the Woods, ( mostly it would be Coccidia which is a Protozoa).
Your other dogs are being subjected to it but they have a Stronger Immune system and can fight it off.

Here is my plan for you and your poor kid!
1.  Please take a Probiotic all summer:  just 1 per day -

The drug you were giving your dog can be very Harsh on the Liver over time.  ( short term it is just fine)  LONG term - NOT  a good choice at all.

3.  Please give you boy 500 mg of ESTER C per day ( must be Ester C)-
great for healing of the intestines...

4.  Please give 1 Metamucil cookie per day to add bulk to the stool.
Just do this for a few weeks... The metamucil company makes a cookie wafer treat / apple or cin flavored.. Yes, it will make the stools solid.. I know if sounds odd but it will.
