Alternative Medicine for Pets/fish oil capsules

Question
I am thinking of adding fish oil to my dog& cats food for their skin, etc.  Is it okay to open the capsules and add the liquid directly to the food or does that contaminate or reduce the effects?  How much should a large dog take each day.  Also, how about flaxseed oil, same question as above?

Answer
HI Diane
it is fine to either open up the capsules, or you can place them whole in the food.  Animals find fish oil very tastey so it should not matter which way you do it - they will eat it.  Flaxseed oil is good, but not as readily absorbable by animals as fish oil is.  Make sure the fish oil is of a high quality, and from a sustainable source if possible.  If you do not want to use fish oil for any reason then you are better to go with a product like Spirulina (rather than flaxseed oil).
I would look at giving your dogs the children's advised dosage.  You can see how they react to this and you can increase slightly if you feel this is not enough.
I hope this is helpful.
Thanks,
Silva.
