Question

Harry
Hi, my 11 yr old male Shiatsu, Harry, may be suffering IBS- he has bad gas, stomach rumblings and bloating. I feed him and my other 3 dogs a home made meal that I have just discovered may be upsetting him- it contains white rice, broccoli and corn...along with boiled skinless chicken, potatoes, carrots and pumpkin. I am going to detox him with brown rice, oatmeal and flax seed oil. My question is...what is a high quality protein food that would be suitable for him. Also, a few articles mention mint may help in humans...is mint ok for dogs as well? Thankyou.

Answer
Hi Mel

As far as I know mint should be fine.  But it may be best to just check this out with a vet first.  Coriander (fresh, chopped leaves) is actually really good for dogs' tummies and helps eliminate gas.

Grains of any sort are irritants (white rice, brown rice, wheat etc...) as are corn and potatoes.  I would avoid all of these and any foods containing them.

Ideal food is free-range chicken (can be raw or boiled, if boiled however do not give the bones), carrots, broccoli, oats (well soaked in water), pumpkin, bok choy, kiwi fruit and apple. Add the chopped coriander leaves ontop of the meal and you should notice a good improvement.  The best sources of protein for older dogs are rabbit and chicken/turkey.  But you can also substitute Aduki/Azuki beans and lentils once or twice per week as well.

Do monitor Harry closely though - take note if the change in diet does have positive results.  If nothing changes then you should get him to a vet to check that something more serious is not going on like blockage or a twist.

Let me know if you want any further clarification on any of this.
Take care,
Silva.

CommentThank you so much for your advice. I actually fed Harry brown rice and flax seed last night after reading it was ok, he will be having chicken and pumpkin tonight for sure.
