Question
QUESTION: Our cat is 10 1/2 years old.  6 months ago he was diagnosed with diabetes.  We changed his diet to a high protein/low carb canned cat food.  He would not heat the vets food, so we buy Wellness Core and some similar brands with very low carbohydrates and grain free.  He has on/off constipation and lately it is becoming chronic.  The vet suggested Lax'aire, which worked in the beginning but it not as effective now.  He seems to need it daily, which the tube does not recommend.  Today he threw up his breakfast and is trying to eliminate anywhere in the house he can.  We were researching the internet, and have given him a can of Blue flaked turkey with two tablespoons and a little water mixed together.  We are waiting for the results - hopefully the pumpkin will help.  Is there anything we can add to his food that would help keep away the constipation?  We also have a 2 1/2 year old male who eats the same soft food, but also gets a little dry food on the side.  Anything we give the older cat the younger one will also eat as they change cat food dishes all the time.  The old cats eats from one dish then moves to the other dish and eats that one.  I guess he wants to be sure they are both getting the same thing. Help

ANSWER: Hi Marsha,  Can you cook for this kitty?  YOUR two Cats will do very well on this recipe.
Canned pure pumpkin is great but high in carbs...  ( give this as little as possible)

try this:  Make sure your VET knows you are home-cooking.

Feline Healthy Recipe

1 cups cooked brown rice
2 eggs
2 lbs   turkey or chicken (or  lean hamburger)   ( choose 1 or 2 Meats)
2 tablespoons bone meal or 5 TUMS  ( yes, Tums)
2 tablespoons olive oil or flaxseed oil
1 teaspoon , Per Cat of NuVET supplement:  See ordering link below
( A must to "balance" out home cooking)

•1 tsp fresh vegetable with each meal zucchini, yellow squash or peas---( Grind fine )

Stir egg into the rice. Let cool. Mix in the remaining ingredients.
Separate what will be eaten in the next 2-3 days and freeze the rest immediately.
You may want to freeze in single serve proportions to make it easier to thaw and serve.
I use the little Baggies - freezer zip lock baggies.

YOUR cat will love this! You can give 1/4 teaspoon of pure canned pumpkin per day if needed.
You can also give 1/4 teaspoon of good old METAMUCIL - fiber powder / mixed well into food.
Don't forget to add a little water to the Metamucil.

This recipe is fine and well balanced with adding the NuVET Feline Vitamin Powder.
I have over 300 cat/kitten clients on the NuVET supplement.  The company even gives a Taste Guarantee - if for any reason they won't eat the NuVET, you get a refund.
MOST cats don't know it's even in the food because it is TASTELESS.

Let me know how your Cat does on this home cooking.  The younger cat will love this, too!
Just make sure the young cat get some dry kibble as a snack each day  ( about 1/8 of a cup or less - )

QUESTION: Thank you very much.  Will this have enough fiber for our cat.  We just found out from the vet that our cat no longer has diabetes/requires insulin.  However, he is in the hospital now because of constipation.  He is cleaned out and will be coming home tomorrow.  We are hoping there is no lasting damage and he can go back to a normal life, with good food like above.

Answer
So glad things are looking better!  Yes, this diet will be fine as long as you give 1 teaspoon of pure canned pumpkin per day.  You can also choose to use Metamucil fiber powder rather than the canned pumpkin.  Just 1/4 of a teaspoon of Metamucil fiber power will do the trick for both cats.  You can use some dry cat kibble for a snack in the afternoon.  ( just make sure you get a good brand name with little to No corn in the ingredients)

BEST wishes....
