Hi!

I have a 10 yo large male (104 lbs) lab mix named Solo that has been diagnosed and treated for a shallow eye ulcer. This has been going on for over 5 weeks now and, despite the effort, it does not seem to want to heal completely.

Here are the basics:

-Sol (for short) has been on a variety of other dog foods in the past but is currently being fed Kirkland adult brand dog food (lamb & rice), 2 cups, twice a day.  In his 10 years, he has not had an illness or injury until now that has required medical procedure or medication. His vaccinations are up to date.
 
-He has never had an abundance of table scraps and/or treats; however, we recently got a new pup which has increased Sol's food and treat intake somewhat since we are training.

-I also had his mother, Lexi, until she passed away on St Patty's day this year. I had been giving them both an equine joint supplement (Fluid Action HA Liquid by Finish Line- also used for dogs) until then because she had been having some hip problems. I was a bit fearful (perhaps irrationally?) after she passed that the supplement may have facilitated her death somehow, so I stopped giving it to him at that point.

-So far the vet has put an e-collar on him, prescribed oral and topical (Gentamicin) antibiotics, given him pain meds (Deramaxx), anesthetized (locally) and debrided his eye and had given me a blood serum to administer as drops as well.

-The blood serum was a complete nightmare. Even with the e-collar, it made him so uncomfortable that he still found ways to scratch and it was almost impossible to get him to sit still once he saw us pull out the syringe. As long as we keep administering the eye drops (which he does not fight) and leave the e-collar on, it seems to clear up but the minute we take off the collar or stop the meds, it starts to look worse again.

-They have stained his cornea several times and, while it seems to keep changing (shrinking, then growing again) in area, it does not appear to be getting any deeper.  

-The vet has recommended that we anesthetize him again (general this time) so they can examine the eye with forceps. The other option is the Ophthalmologist but at this point, things are getting a bit expensive and I don't really want to anesthetize him unnecessarily. I am also not sure about continuing the Deramaxx either due to the health risks.   

-I have always been a fan of natural healing when it is possible and have had success with alternative options in the past, for myself, as well as my pets.

Any thoughts or suggestions for this situation?

Glad you have had the VET DX and treat this eye.
Sure, you can try some Natural Products-  It won't hurt and can be used with anything your VET is also ordering for your dog.
