Question
The past few days have been very tearful for me in trying to decide how best to help my 12 year old Westie with a torn back leg ACL. 2 vets and an orthopedic specialist have said she should have surgery and I really want to treat her non-surgically if I can. I read pro and cons online for both approaches and I don't know what to do. The dangers of pain medication like Rimadyl scare me. Do you have any words of wisdom on this and if you think non-surgical is a viable option could you direct me to credible references on line to teach me how to treat her. I live in Houston and if I could find a vet to help me with a non-surgical approach that would be great. The tear appears to have been gradual as she just stopped using her leg about 5 days ago with no apparent sudden injury. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Lisa,  Well, so glad you did get two opinions on the ACL injury.
You never have to rush into surgery.  It's an option if that route is needed over time.
You can always try some alternative methods first.

Many times we have offered supplements and rest.
No need for harsh drugs.

You can also look around to see if you have a Holistic Vet in your area.
Just google :  holistic Vet and then your town or city.
