Alternative Music - name and artist of early 90's (?) alt song with movie lyrics?
Expert: Amarilis Gibeli - 2/11/2005
Question Hey,
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately Warning by the Levellers is
not the song I'm looking for. I found that song when searching
the web too. I figure the only way to find the name/artist of this
song I'm going to have to find someone that just knows it. I've
asked record store employees, music experts, friends, etc. Even if
someone knows the song, they don't know the artist or how I can
find it.
Any further help would be appreciated.

Question -
I realize this may be outside your area of expertise but I thought
I'd give it a try. I already
tried asking another expert (Jeff Robinson) who said this was
outside his area.
There's a song I remember from the early 90's (though i guess it
could've been recorded
earlier) that's sorta edgy, semi-industrial sounding, alternative
club music. It was played
with the likes of NIN, Ministry, etc. The key is that some of the
lyrics were borrowed from
the Howard Beale character featured in the 70's movie NETWORK.
Some lyrics include:
"...there were 63 (or some number) violent crimes, as if that's the
way it's supposed to be!
we know things are bad, they're far beyond bad, they're CRAZY"
( then the chorus )
"going in for the kill....
the illusion is real"
PLEASE HELP ME! Everyone thinks I made this up!"

Hello Barb,
Thanks for your attention, and please, accept my apologies for the
delay in getting back to
you, I was out of town.
I guess you are looking for "Warning", by The Levellers, check the
lyrics:
(I don't have to tell you things are bad,
everyone knows it; it's a depression.
Crowds are running wild in the streets,
but nobody anywhere seems to know
what to do with them
-- now listen ...
You know the air is unfit to breath
, our food is unfit to eat.
We know things are bad,
worse than bad; T
hey're crazy,
it's like everything everywhere
is going crazy
so we don't go out anymore.
We sit in the house and slowly
the world we're living in is getting smaller
and all we say is
Please ... at least leave us alone in our living room.
All I know is
that first we've got to get mad ...
You've got to say
I'm a human being GOD DAMN IT!
-- my life has value!
I want you to get up right now
I want you to get up now
I want all of you to get up out of your chairs
I want you to get up right now
I want you to get up right now
I want you to get up now
I want all of you to get up out of your chair
s -- I want you to get up right now
and go to the window,
open it and stick your head out and yell ...
I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANY
MORE! )
Summer UK '93
Controlled substances in hand
Flash photos on location
Final end solution
Road block
Cash from chaos received
This sun burns more than you believe
The smell of C.S. gas
Confusion of the mass
Cold sweat
Warning
Out of control
You know we know
Turning your face away
But where to go
Shake it down by any means
You know you've seen this all before
Broken words from loud hailers
Hands raised in the air
And no tune
Armed surveillance last dance
Sparks fly at the first glance
Helpless face within the flame
First purge of the new game
Crass press."
This tune was written upon the quotes by Howard Beal (as played
by Peter Finch) in
NETWORK (1976), written by Paddy Chayefsky, as below:
"I don't have to tell you things are bad -- everybody knows things
are bad. Everybody's out
of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's
worth... banks are going
bust... shop-keepers keep a gun under the counter... punks are
running wild on the street
and there's nobody anywhere that seems to know what to do. And
there's no end to it. We
know the air is unfit to breathe, our food is unfit to eat... we sit
watching our T.V.s while
some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen
homicides and sixty-three violent
crimes -- as if that's the way it's supposed to be!
We know things are bad; worse than bad. They're crazy! It's like
everything, everywhere is
going crazy. So, we don't go out anymore; we sit in the house and
slowly the world we're
living in is getting smaller and we say: Please, at least leave us
alone in our living rooms...
let me have my toaster and my T.V. and my steel-belted radials
and I won't say anything --
just leave us alone.
But I'm not gonna leave you alone... I want you to get mad! I don't
want you to protest and I
don't want you to riot or write your Congressman, because I
wouldn't know what to tell you
to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the
inflation and the Russians or
the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get
mad... you've got to say: I'm
a human being -- Goddamn it -- my life has value!
I want you to get up now, I want all of you to get up out of your
chairs. I want you to get up,
right now, and go to the window -- open it and stick your head
out and yell: I'M AS MAD AS
HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! I want you to
get up -- RIGHT NOW --
go to your windows, open them, and stick your head out and yell:
I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND
I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! Things have got to
change! You've got to get
mad... you've got to SAY: I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT
GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!
Then, we'll figure out what to do..."
Hope I have been helpful, and if you want anything else, please
feel free to get in touch, ok?
With my regards,
Amarilis Gibeli - "Searchin' around..."
