Question
My mother has progressive alzheimer disease.  She is so
paranoid that she feels she is going to be put to sleep at
4pm everyday.  Then they are going to cremate her.  She
absolutely believes this.  She is staying in alheimer unit
at an assisted living place.  What will be the next stage
to look for?
Respectfully,
Diane

Answer
Hello Diane,

Thank you for writing.  This current stage of Alzheimer's disease is the most challenging for you And your mother.  Please be patient with her and try to comfort her as much as possible.  Do Not respond to her paranoia, pleas, stories, etc.  Rather, try to refocus her attention to another topic, item in the room, story, etc.  YOU have the ability to change her thoughts...she doesn't at this point.

The next stage is much calmer for your mother.  No more paranoia, hallucinations or extreme personality changes.  However, this is also a caveat; that is, your mother is progressing in the disease and will need more caregiver interventions and more simplified interactions with staff and you.

I'm a firm believer in lots of laughter, happiness and love...no matter what level of Alzheimer's.  Find ways to bring that into your mother's life when you visit and i'll bet that YOU will leave feeling even better than when you came.

Have a blessed holiday,
