Alzheimer`s Disease/AD - my Mother In Law

Question
I just found out my Mother in Law has AD - was just speaking to her doctor, I'm in shock. I went right away looking online for help and found your name. I don't know where to start, what to ask, where can I go for help, any information that's going to help me in helping her to feel confortable? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Virginia, I know this is probably not what you wanted to hear from her doctor, but believe me knowing is much better!!  At least you can plan for it.  The best thing you should do is contact the Alzheimer's Association.  They will have so much information for you.

Talk to your mom too and find out from her what her end of life issues are.  I realize that she may live another ten years, but she will not be able to make decisions then, so knowing now will make your life easier.  Get her to write a living will.  Also make sure that you have a durable power of attorney.  You will definitely need this!

Stay in contact and ask all the questions you think of!!  Knowledge will be your BEST friend!!  Make sure that your siblings if you have any are also well educated.  You will need them for support later.
Take care and let me hear from you again!  Paula
