Question Hi,
My mother lives in FL and was diagnosed with AD last year. I have been unhappy with her health insurance company and I was wondering if anyone has done any research as to which insurance companies provide better coverage for Alzheimer's patients. I've checked with the Alz Assn, Alz Foundatn, etc. with no luck thus far. Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thank you,
ab
Answer Hello Alison,
Thank you for writing. Your question is very interesting and i'm not exactly sure what you mean by "coverage for Alzheimer's patients".
Health insurances are not designed to provide "better coverage" for one disease or another. They were designed to aid in acute, distress needs whereby you need to go to the doctor or need hospitalization or medications.
Generally, an individual with Alzheimer's disease is in good health and does not utilize their health insurance except for routine doctor visits or if there is an emergency; such as, a broken leg from a fall.
My suggestion to compare health insurances would be to see what co-pays your mother will have with doctor visits, hospital visits and the medication costs from her current medications.
An additional note is that if she is living or going to be living in a skilled residential facility ...she really only needs Medicare and a good Medicare supplement. HMO's and Medicare replacement insurances are best utilized for preventative type of coverage.
Check out the Medicare.gov website for more information on health coverages.
Hope this helps!
Best Regards,
