Question
MY Grandfather is 86 yrs of age and is in his last stages of Alzheimer's he still eats and drinks plenty but is now seeing people, & holding conversations with people not in his room. But lately he has been saying that he sees alot of water i wanted to know exactly what it is. Is it just that maybe he is hilusinating from the meds. hes taking?

Answer
Hello Celeste,

This is an excellent question and thanks for writing me!

As parts of the brain deteriorate with Alzheimer's disease, it is not uncommon for folks to "see people".   Their perceptions are very real to them, due to the "overlapping" of memories and reality.  I would acknowledge these "people" and yet not dwell on their existance in your grandfather's life.

Water is interesting.  Would any of his past history point to an occupation of water?  Fishing, boating, etc.?

If we view the brain as a "file cabinet", you will find that many of our memories are stored there and thus, sometimes rise to the surface when such a disease is present.

Again, i would truly believe that he Does see "water".  But, i would try to calm him if this gives him any fear and acknowlege that yes, he does see water.

At this stage, emotional calmness and love is the key to transitioning.

I hope this helps your relationship at this time with your grandfather.
