Question
My aunt is 94 years old and now requires skilled around the clock care.  Her 64 year old daughter recently passed away and for reasons unknown to my brother and I, never told us about my aunt having Alzheimer's.  The last time I spoke with my aunt was about 3 years ago and my cousin said that she had become more hard of hearing and was also recovering from a broken hip.My cousin had appointed an attorney to make decisions on her behalf, and we were sent some information about her current health status.  It indicated that she is on anti-psychotics, and is treated for hypertension.  Her disposition indicated that she is "oblivious to her surroundings and couldn't answer questions".
My question is, in your opinion, does she have long to live? I know none of us can predict the future, but this really bothers me. I am familiar with health care and privacy rules.  I just want to be prepared for that "bad news phone call"

Answer
Hello Ellen,

Thank you for writing.  This must be a difficult position for you and your brother to be in at this time.

Alzheimer's disease is a disease that deteriorates the brain, causing memory and personality changes as well as a slow decline in bodily functions.  It does not "cause" death...rather, the effects of the brain shutting down causes death.

Therefore, unknowing your aunt's other diagnoses and her overall health condition, i cannot give you a "rough estimate".    But, at 94 years old, everyday is a gift.

Best Regards,
