Question
My father has had some sort of dementia for over 10 years. He has been incontinent since 2004, hasn't spoken since 2005, and quit walking last July. He also has diabetes. He can only hold his cup, and can no longer hold eating utensils. His food is pureed. He has not lost any weight, though, and his vital signs are all good. He has that glassy stare, and can no longer communicate in any way. I have been told it is possible for him to live another 10 years. He is 82. How long can someone live like this?

Answer
Hello Jean,

Thank you for writing.  Unfortunately, Dementia can last many years.  It is not uncommon for an individual to have a very slow progression of the disease.   It sounds like this may be the occurance for your father.

When your father starts to lose weight and no longer makes eye contact is when you most likely need to really worry about his immediate health.

My sympathy and wishes for your continued strength in providing him as much love as possible.

Best Regards,
