Alzheimer`s Disease - Travel long flight with Alzheimer Patient

Question
Hi,

My mother in law is at advance stage of Alzheimer. She does not recognize the family lot of times and it has really gone bad in last few years. We are planning trip to India for 4 wks. Total flight time is 16 hrs flight + 5 or 6 hrs wait time (one way). Our concern is whether she will be able to fly for that long and now that she hardly remembers anyone, is it a good decision for her to go that far. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks,

KS

Answer
Hi KS,

Thank you for writing.  I believe you are going to find travel with your mother in law very difficult for both of you.   Because of her advanced Alzheimer's disease, any slight change in daily routine can set an individual into an arrary of anxiety, disorientation, etc.   You may find that once she is on the plane, she will not be able to sit still and be pacing and looking for ways to get out of the plane.  It is going to be a Very challenging situation.

Professionally and personally, i would totally not put her Nor You through that ordeal.

Please google travel and Alzheimer's disease for more specifics.

Best Regards,
Michalene Peticca, MA
