Question
My mother fell and broke her nose and cut her eye and forhead and required stitches. She said she never had a headache and that she never hurt. She has a history of mini strokes. Is it possible that she never had pain or felt pain?

Answer
Hello Sandra,

Thank you for writing.

Each Alzheimer's individual experiences many of the same "symptoms" and some experience very unique, individualized symptoms.   It is certainly possible that your mother did not experience pain from her fall.  Alzheimer's disease is a disease that erodes the brain tissue, thus eroding receptors.   It is quite possible that the receptors needed to experience the pain from her fall have eroded due to the disease.

Alzheimer's is quite complex and the medical world is still seeing many interesting aspects of the disease process.

I hope your mom will heal quickly.

Best Regards,
