Question
Hello.  Thank you for your time.  My question is about taking the medication Aricept.  My grandmother was diagnosed approximately 7 years ago with Alzheimer's type Dementia and was put on Aricept to help maintain.  In the last 2 years she has declined both mentally and physically and we question the need to take this medication anymore.  We are not sure if taking it at this point is helpful or not.  She still remembers who her children are but is full care in a nursing home and beyond lengthy comprehendible conversation.  The fear is that if we take her off there will be no recognition or much of a response.  I tend to find it hard to believe that a small pill is what is keeping her with us but am not sure.  That is why I am asking for more insight.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Tracey,

Thank you for writing.

Aricept is still considered one of the most effective memory "sustaining" medications available for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's or another Dementia disorder.

However, i do use the word "sustaining", it will not repair or cure the damage created by the disease and overtime, the disease continues to ravage the brain and more noticeable changes occur.   These are what your seeing at this point.

I am not a physician, but it has been my experience that once an individual is "weaned" from Aricept, yes, there is a decline in memory and physical abilities.

My suggestion is to leave her on the Aricept at this point.  You will know when it is a "right" time to take her off the medication.
