Alzheimer`s Disease/How long is the end stage?

Question
Diagnosed in 98, my mom has followed the stages to the book.
She developed kidney cancer in 2005 and in May had one kidney removed.  She bounced back from that great.
We now believe the cancer has spread to the lymph glands, but we are not going to treat it.  I don't know if the cancer has to do with her recent deterioration or if this is the end stage of the alzheimer's.
It does sound like the end stage from what I have read, but no one has said how long this can go on.

In the last three weeks she has gone down hill.
She doesn't want to eat, cannot hold up her head and pulls herself into a fetal position most of the time. Very few words are spoken and she is sleeping even more than the usual 16 hour days she has been.  Even when we get her up and dressed, she seems to just want to sleep.  If this is the ending, and I pray that it is, how long does this go on?
We have cared for her at home and have everything in order for her passing.  I have told her it was okay to go and that I knew she was tired.  I just can't hold up much longer.
Thank you for your time,
Teresa

Answer
Dear Teresa, I wish that I could tell you it will only be "x" number of ___.  I cannot.  I don't know of anyone who could.  Her doctor could give you a better estimate.

Do you have Hospice involved?  They could help you hold up for as long as is needed.  It could be that your mom is in pain and is sleeping to try to get rid of the pain.  Or the cancer could be taking all of her energy away.  If she is truly not eating anymore, then it should be over fairly quickly.  I would guess a few weeks.  However if she is taking in even small amounts it could last longer.  Not knowing whether or not the cancer is back for sure and at what stage that is it is also hard to help you with this answer.

My best suggestion is to get Hospice involved.  I hope this helps you.  I know this is hard.  I wish I could do something else to help you.  Take care, Paula
