Question
Hi, my mom I know is in the end stages of dementia and in addition to that she has a poor vascular disease going on.  She has developed gangrene in her left foot and it is rapidly spreading.  She has stop eating for the last 3-4 weeks, the last three days she's only wet her depend once, she's doing a lot of sleeping.  Her foot with the gangrene is continually getting worse.  My question is how long do you think a person can live with gangrene?  The option of having the foot amputated is out because of the no blood supply in her leg.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Ann, For sure I can't predict the amount of time she has left, but I would say it is only a matter of time, days maybe a week or two.  Do you have Hospice involved in her care?  Even if she is in a home Hospice can usually come in and supply medicines and support to make it easier on her and you.  I hope you are using this service.

I am sorry you are going through this.  I hope she doesn't suffer much longer.  Please take care of yourself and write if you need anything else.  Paula
