Amateur Wrestling - How can I turn myself into a state champion?

Expert: P.Friedl - 2/18/2008

Question
A little background.  I am currently a freshman in High School.  I tried wrestling back in 6th grade, played on the modified team in 7th, and regretably took the year off in 8th.  But I'm back and I want to get good.  I have been told a lot that I have a lot of potential, though this season wrestling varsity at 112 I've had a hard time coming up with results.

Today was the final day of sectionals.  We're a division 2 school if you care.  Most of my team were not in, and one of the two who were pretty much got stomped on (surprisingly, we thought he had a pretty good shot at getting 1st).  The other, an 8th grader and the coach's son, took 1st and is going to States.

I saw the joy and happiness in all those who won.  I want that.  I had decided a while ago I was willing to commit, and this affirmed it.

I plan on working in the offseason to get better.  Open mats and Spring tournaments.  My coach even said he'd take people to the state practices with his son if they wanted to go, and I think I may do that.  Camps of course (if there are any you'd recommend in NY that would be coo).  I'm going to start lifting weight and things, which we cut out of the normal practice for time reasons and I did not pursue on my own.  This should help a bunch too, as I get muscled by most of the people I meet on the mat.

I want to get good.  Do you think I can become a state champion in the 3 years I have left to try?  I'm willing to dedicate myself.  Any suggestions or tips?  Anything?

Even if state champion isn't possible, I've heard a saying a few times.  Shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you'll end up among the stars.

Answer
hmm.. tricky.  well here ya go. you already have the drive that's the first part. start small, try and perfect everything you do and continue to try new moves and perfect them.  make sure that you wrestle in practice the way you wrestle in meets.  last but not least, do not wrestle the name, wrestle the guy.  and eventually you will be the guy everyone is affraid to wrestle.  hope this helps.
