Question
Hey coach, I am in need of some help. I am a beginning wrestler, 5 foot 10, and 150 pounds. I need some ideas for some technique, because mine is obviously not working. I have plenty of upper and lower body strength, but my weakness is 100% technique. Again, What Should I Do???

Answer
Hey Jesse,

Thank you for the question. The first thing you will want to think about is your natural abilities. Make a list of your strengths ( power, speed, reaction time, flexibility, etc.) and your weaknesses, (lack of cardio, stamina, focus, etc.) Once you determine that, find out what moves come natural to you, according to your body-style : i.e. tall wrestlers usually are good at throws and leg riding - short, powerful wrestlers are usually good with fireman's carrys and good defensively. Search youtube for techniques and study the ones that look interesting to you. Also consult with your coaches as they will be able to assess your skill level from different, experienced vantage points. Once you determine what comes natural to you, you will be able to proceed with putting your technique together. You may like to shoot doubles or singles because you are quick and have balance. Or you may like to use upper-body throws because you have exceptional upper-body strength. But I think you get the picture, just don't limit yourself from learning any particular technique because you never know what might work for you if you don't attempt it first, and over an extended trial period. Just remember to drill slowly with focus until your motor skills become instinctive. Speed and power will come with time. Just make sure that your conditioning is second to none, because any move works better against an opponent that is tired. You can check out my websites for training meals and energy drinks that will give you a competitive edge around energy and stamina. Good luck and work hard!

Yours in the Quest for Gold,

Coach Rae-Rae
