American Motors/1978 cj5 not starting

Question
hi. I recently purchased a 78 cj5 with inline 6 258 motor for a plow vehicle. it was starting fine but now will periodically only click and engage the starter, but will not turnover and ignite. new battery did not help and the previous owner had a new alternator installed. it will start when popped and runs well when running.any thoughts? as the snow continues to pile up,i am growing concerned.

Answer
Usually, a clicking noise indicates an excessive voltage drop in the starter circuit. Low battery voltage, corroded battery terminals, corroded or loose connectors at the solenoid or starter, or defective solenoid. Check the above items and let me know what you find.
