American Motors/1963 660 fuel gauge

Question
I recently picked up a gem of a wagon.  Fuel gauge does not work, stuck on E.  Do you have any tips on pulling out the panel and/or what to look for?  Thanks for any help.

Answer
Before removing the instrument cluster to get to the gauge, why not see if it works.
Remove the wire at the fuel tank sender, located on the fuel tank. Turn the key on and touch the end of the wire to a good ground. The gauge needle should peg to full. If it does, then chances are your tank sender unit is bad. If the needle doesn't peg, the gauge could be bad or the constant voltage regulator (CVR) located on the circuit board could be bad.
Removing the instrument cluster involves some Phillip head screws and careful maneuvering.
