American Motors/63' Classic 770 Steering

Question
Thanks for your previous answer.  What you described sounds close to the problem I have with one exception.  The slop in the system is not coming from the steering box- the pitman is actually moving around inside of the ram. I see the replacement for the pitman arm on the Napa site, but nothing for the bushing.  Is that a standard pitman bushing inside there, or is it particular to the ram?

Answer
The "ram" is called the steering gear box.
It would be best to just replace the complete steering gear box with a used unit from a salvage yard or AMC dealer.
Try calling Collier AMC in Pikeville, NC at 919-242-4462. Ask for Bobby Collier, he is an old AMC dealer and will probably have a steering gear for your car.
