American Motors/1965 Marlin

Question
Kevin, just purchased a survivor Marlin with a 287 automatic.  Car is out of Arizona and in very good running and body condition.  I had been looking for a Marlin with a 327 but just could not find a clean one.  I am debating...in putting a 327 in place of the 287.  Is there much alteration needed or is it a fairly common process.  I am probably crazy to do it for just a little more HP...but just curious if it is a major undertaking....that is if I can find a Rambler 327..as I understand it is not the same as a GMC 327...or am I incorrect in that assumption?  I do want to keep this rig as a survivor...with maybe a little more power as I appreciate the survisor status.  Can you tell me if I would put a 327 in the Marlin...does the VIN # identify original engine....as I do not have the origninal documents...I am positive though that the 287 is original...just dont have the original purchase documents.  Do you have any contacts on additional parts for the Marlins?  It does have air as well.  Thanks for any advice and leads.   I am looking forward to playing around with this unique unit.   PS, I also liked Gremlin X,s...so ya know I have a off-track love of unique rigs.  Thanks again.

Answer
The AMC 287 & 327 are identical engines, with the exception of the CID. The 327 AMC engine will drop right into your Marlin. Personally, for the expense and effort involved in finding a 327 and exchanging with your 287 in your Marlin, it just isn't worth it.
Change your transmission fluid and have the bands adjusted (by a KNOWLEDGEABLE mechanic).
Tune up your 287 and go enjoy your Marlin, it's an awesome car!
Also, a GM 327 is totally different from an AMC 327.
If you need parts, give Bobby Collier a call at Collier AMC in Pikeville, NC. His number is 919-242-4462.
