American Motors/Help with a 1966 AMC Marlin Trunk

Question
The trunk on my 66 Marlin hasn't been opened in about 4+ years, because the lock is missing.  You can look at were the lock was and can clearly see that some one has tried to pry it open before.  My dad and I both tried to get it open too, but after about 30min had no luck what so ever.  I would like to find a why to open the trunk without taking out the back seat (I still don't know if I can even get in it that way).  I hope maybe you have a clue as to how to open it.

Thanks
Robert Parlett

Answer
Robert,
I'll be honest, I have never had to break into a 66 Marlin trunk. However, most of the time, if the key cylinder has been removed, you should be able to use a straight screwdriver. Use a flashlight and you should be able to locate a slot in the trunk latch. This is the slot the original key cylinder went into. Use the screwdriver to twist the latch and open the trunk...maybe. Like I said, I haven't been in the trunk of a 66 for MANY years. If you can find another AMC from that era and look at its latch assembly, it might give you some ideas. Check some old junk yards or maybe somone you know has an old Rambler.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Call American Parts Depot at 937-678-7249 and ask them to look at a trunk latch they may have in stock, they might be able to provide you with some ideas on how to break into the trunk.
