American Motors/Jeep 304 starts intermittently

Question
I have a 77 304 in my jeep with 260,00 miles on the engine.  Engine ran great until August then started back-firing, stopping and not re-starting, etc.  I first inspected wiring, replaced distributor because wire going into it was frayed.  Still backfired and cut out.

Put timing light on and saw that firing point was erratic.  Just replaced timing gear/chain set.  Engine started and after warming up, same problems returned.  When engine does start, ignition is preceded by loud backfire through the exhaust.

Replaced ignition module today, problem not solved.

Any ideas or help?  Plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter all replaced in July.

Answer
Wayne,
Here's a few ideas for you:
1) Inspect cap and rotor for cracks or carbon tracks. I know they're new, but it can't hurt.
2) Perform a compression test. You could have a broken valve spring or a problem in your valve train.
3) Check the firing order and the plug wire routing.

4) is the carburetor OK?
Let me know your findings.
