American Motors/transmission swap

Question
I recently aquired a 304 1972 javelin sst, automatic trans. I found out that although the trans. functions, that it has been overhauled and does not work that well.  I wanted a manual in the 1st place, so I was wondering if I should swap out the automatic trans, or if it would cost too much.  I also couldn't do that kind of project myself and would probably have to take it somewhere to get the trans. swapped out(any suggestions?).  Just wondering if you think its a good idea.  Thanks.

Answer
Jay,
To install a manual transmission in your Javelin would require a number of different components. i.e. clutch/brake pedal assembly, Clutch linkage, bellcrank, flywheel, clutch plate, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bushing, bellhousing, transmission, trans mount, rear crossmember, tunnel plate to cover the opening, possibly a driveshaft and U joints, a transmission and shift linkage.
The best way would be to find a 71-74 Javelin with a manual transmission to get these components from. When you include labor to swap out all these parts, it can be very pricey.
It might be more economical to have the automatic transmission overhauled. You can have a shift kit installed which will firm up the shifting pattern.
I would stay with the automatic, but if you have a healthy check book, go for it.
