Amiga Problems - Problem turning on my old Amiga 500

Expert: Gregory Donner - 4/12/2009

Question
Hi,

I have just gotten my old Amiga 500 (which has been stowed away in a cardboard box for years) back and wanted to play some of my old games.

Unfortunately, even though I believe I have connected all the cables the same way I used to do, the TV cannot find the signal from my Amiga 500 and it seems like the Amiga does not turn on properly.

When I  switch on the power, the green led-light which used to light up green until a disc was inserted does instead blink green. It only stops blinking when I press Ctrl + A + A and resumes blinking when I stop pressing those buttons.

It seems to me like something inside has stopped working/short circuted or something like that. Do you have any ideas about how to solve the problem or whether I should just "forget" my old Amiga?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Answer
Hi Jonas,

Since you're not getting any kind of feedback (i.e. solid-colored screens) from your Amiga 500, I would suggest checking to make sure that any socketed chips are properly seated and see if this doesn't resolve it or at least restore the video.

If this doesn't resolve it, you could check with a place like Software Hut (www.softhut.com) in the USA, or AmigaKit (www.amigakit.com) in the U.K. to see how much they would charge to repair it. However, with shipping costs and labor charges, it may well be cheaper to just buy another used Amiga 500 from a place like eBay (www.ebay.com).

The problem with Amigas is that many of them are now well over 20 years old, and age is taking its toll on the hardware. Even new systems that have never been used before can develop problems after such a long time. Just be sure if/when buying a new-to-you Amiga system that the seller confirms that everything works fine.

I hope this helps!

Greg
