Question Hi, I was just given an old Amiga 2000 that I used to play when I was young.
The first time I plugged it in, it booted right up. Every time after that, it
seems to be stuck at the AmigaDos screen. All it says on the screen is
"Copyright 1985-1991 Commodore-Amiga, Inc. All right reserved." and then
a "1>". What is the command that it wants me to put in to boot the computer
or what can I do to go around this screen and boot the computer?
Answer Hi Andy,
If the first time your system booted up by itself without needing a Workbench disk inserted into the floppy disk drive, then it has a hard drive installed, and was--at least at that time--working correctly. However, it sounds like for some reason the hard drive has failed in some way, and that is why you are seeing the Command Line Interface (or "CLI", also known as the "Shell" screen) that you describe.
The command to boot into Workbench is "LoadWB" (without the quotes). However, if your hard disk drive has indeed failed, then you'll need to either replace it, or you can boot up using the "Workbench" diskette that should have come with your Amiga 2000 system. Typing "LoadWB" at the CLI screen requires the Workbench diskette inserted into the floppy disk drive if your hard drive has failed.
Judging from the Copyright text (1985-1991), you appear to have Kickstart 2.04 installed (Kickstart is the ROM or BIOS in your system), so Workbench 2.04 (or ideally, 2.1) would be the set of diskettes you would need. If you don't have these diskettes, you can check with the following two stores:
