Amiga Problems/Amiga Workbench
Expert: Gregory Donner - 10/17/2007
QuestionQUESTION: Hi Greg,
No nothing happens when I type loadwb. It just gives me a new command line.
Does it matter that my workbench is 2.05 and my amiga is 1.2? Does that have anything to do with it?
What do I need to do?
Thanks,
Larry
ANSWER: Hi Larry,
Yes, that has everything to do with it; you need to use a Workbench 1.2 (or 1.3) disk to boot from. You should be able to find one at one of the following places:
* Software Hut (www.softhut.com)
* AmigaKit (www.amigakit.com)
* eBay (just search for "Workbench 1.2" and "disk").
I hope this helps,
Greg

QUESTION: Is is possible to just change the kickstart chip to 2.05? Will that work? I found 2.05 kickstart chips on ebay.
ANSWER: As far as I know, Kickstart 2.05 was only intended for the changes/differences in the Amiga 600, and so I wouldn't recommend trying it on your Amiga 500. I would suggest either Kickstart 2.04 or 3.1. Be sure that whatever Kickstart chipset you get is intended for your Amiga 500, as there are different types of ROMs for the different Amiga models.

QUESTION: Once I change the kickstart, will I then need work bench disks to get it to boot?
AnswerYes, you'll need a full set of Workbench disks matching the version of Kickstart that you install. Please note that installation instructions for the Kickstart ROM you buy is something you'll need to find online, or perhaps have done at an Amiga dealer such as Software Hut.
