Amphibian/Newts

Question
Hi,

I have a 20 gallon tank with a gourami, barbs, and snail.  It is pretty empty
right now and has a lot of flexibility.  I had wanted to get a Fire Bellied Newt,
but it seems they need a colder environment than my fish do.

I was wondering if this is true and if it is then are there any tropical aquatic
newt species that could work for me.

Answer
You are right in saying Fire Bellied Newts do need slightly cooler temperatures than tropical fish. Anything higher than 74 or 74 and the newts become more prone to illness and disease. Fire Bellied Newts also need a place that they can climb out of the water, and you will find them climbing out your heater or your filter if given the chance. Your biggest problem, judging by the fish that you have listed, is that the fish are more than likely going to be aggressive towards a newt. Barbs & Gouramis are both semi-aggressive and as such do pose a threat to any newt(regardless of species) you place in the tank. If you have your heart set on getting a newt, I would recommend you set up a separate tank just for them. Good luck! If you have any other questions, let me know.
