Question
Hi, was thinking about going up to Cedar Point during the opening month in May sometime.  Was wondering if the Dragster will be running?  How are things different in the first couple opening weekends?  Are things low-staffed, certain rides closed (I'm guessing the water rides are) but any others?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi DV!

Thanks for using Allexperts.com. May is a great time to visit Cedar Point -- the crowds are lower and the weather is still cool. Please note, however, that the weather can be stormy at times -- if you have flexibility in your schedule, I'd recommend checking the weather forecast before heading to the park.

Whether or not Top Thrill Dragster will be running is mainly up to the weatherman. Since the coaster is no longer new, it doesn't have the bugs to work out that it once did, and it doesn't shut down early and late in the season for other reasons. Staffing on TTD won't be a problem, and yes, it should be operating just fine, unless there is a mechanical problem, which of course we can't possibly predict.

Another recommendation is to call ahead and check on special groups days -- physics days for high schools, and other events that bring in large groups to the park. If you call the park information hotline (419/627-2350), they should be able to let you know about groups on the days you're interested in.

Most other rides will be open just fine as well. You're right, the water rides will be closed, as will Soak City. All the other rides will be open (with the possible exception of some of the kiddie rides -- they may have a rotating staff and only have a few open at a time). The park is low-staffed in May, yes, but with the lower crowds it isn't really noticeable. The biggest changes will be if you are interesed in souvenirs -- the biggest supply isn't usually available until mid-June. Some food stands may also be closed, particularly in more remote parts of the park (way back in Frontier Town, and along the Ocean Midway near Ocean Motion), as well as some smaller gift shops (along the Frontier Trail). If, on the other hand, you're going for the coasters and larger thrill rides, they will all be open.

I hope this helps answer your questions; have a great trip! I'd really appreciate if you could take a moment to rate me here on Allexperts.com; thanks much!

Sincerely,
Melissa Mayntz

Expertise

I can answer any questions about Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio) ride policies (height requirements, line length, closing due to weather, etc.), park layout, dining options, and the wide variety of shows and attractions that Cedar Point offers. I can also answer questions about how to become an employee there, including what types of jobs are available, age requirements, the application process, employee housing, pay rates, benefits, and so forth. If I cannot answer questions in these areas, I can likely point you to good sources for further information.

Experience

I have visited Cedar Point since the early 1980s, and worked there for six seasons (1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2008). I have worked a number of different rides, including both smaller rides and major roller coasters, and I have experienced the different sides of employee life (housing, activities, etc.). During the 2003 season, I was the team leader for a ride location, responsible for crew scheduling, crew training, and in general operating the ride. I continue to be active in the amusement park community, and maintain connections to Cedar Point that allow me to always have updated information available.
