Back in the 70's there was a Wizard of Oz theme park at Beech Mountain, North Carolina. I remember it as a child. The whole park revolved around the movie. You went in dorthy's house in Kansas and went down to the basement during the tornado and came out the back door, which was actually the front again only to appear on the yellow brick road.... You walked it all the way to OZ and stopped to talk to each of the characters along the way..... They didnt have much in the way of rides, except a skyway that looked like hot air baloons.... That may be the reason for its demise in the early 80's. It sure was fun though and I hate my kids couldnt every experience it.

I remember going to one when I was a child. It had to be in the NC area somewhere. I guess the visit was around the late 70's.

There actually used to be a WIzard of Oz theme park in North Carolina (possibly S.C.) back in the 1970's. I visited it when I was in the 1st grade actually and what a wonderful experience it was. Every year, many people make the piligrimage in the fall to go back to the ruins of the park. I'm still looking for the actual place and times myself.

Sure wish there was a "Wizard of Oz" Theme Park. I cannot satisfy our 3 year old granddaughter who insists on seeing the "real" Dorothy.

there is rumor of a Wizard of Oz theme park. It has been a while since I heard of anything, but from what I understand it was 1st going to be built in Kansas, but now I believe the location will be in New York near lake Erie (Niagra County?). A friend of mine who lives in New York mentioned that she was something in the papaer about that being the new location. The theme park was suppose to be completed 4 years ago (was going to go there for my high school graduation gift) but I think there was protest about the location or something about copyrights.

There WAS a a Wizard Of Oz Theme park in the 70's. It was located on Beech Mountain in NC. It closed up shop in 1980 but once a year they reopen the area, where remanents of the original park exist, for a few days in October.

Yes there was. The Land of Oz is a mostly now-defunct theme park located in the resort town of Beech Mountain, North Carolina. It was opened in 1970 by Grover Robbins, who had been successful with Tweetsie Railroad, and was fully operational until 1980. In the late nineties, much of the old theme park was restored and is now opened once a year in October when Beech Mountain holds their annual "Autumn at Oz" festival. Although the balloon rides and the Emerald City are long gone, visitors can once again stroll down the Yellow Brick Road and see some of their old "friends" again

Well, there once was an amusement park about the Wizard of Oz in the 1970s but unfortunately closed in the 1980s. It states that it opens only on the first weekend of October, but I am not sure if that still applies. There IS a Wizard Of Oz musuem in Kansas and some wax musuems include the Wizard of Oz characters.
Hope That Answers your Question....

The Land of Oz in Beech Mountain, North Carolina was a theme park back in the 70s. It still exists but is not an open theme park. You can still take tours and walk on the yellow brick road. Also they have a fall festival there for 2 days every year where all the characters are there and lots more. I am so excited to go!!!
